Pastoral Ministry

“It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,  not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.” – 1 Timothy 3:1-7  (NASB)

Welcome to THE PASTOR’S INSTITUTE

The Pastor’s Institute in Port Jervis, New York, exists to provide men of faith who sense God’s call to pastoral ministry with a focused educational and vocational path to ordination.  A Pastor must be competent and thorough in interpreting the biblical texts, which means pastors must be prepared, well-rounded theologians who appeal to the whole canopy of Scripture as the church has understood them.  At The Pastor’s Institute, our professional ministerial staff will help pastoral candidates pursue scholastic excellence in a formal setting that is academically rigorous, theologically orthodox, Christ-centered, and spiritually grounded in the sacred Scriptures.

The Pastor’s Institute prepares men for the challenges of ministry, some of which includes, spiritual warfare, spiritual and moral leadership, sermon preparation, effective preaching techniques and conducting worship services, which includes officiating at special services, such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals.  Pastors must be wise with their time and with church finances; these disciplines are part of our training.  Students will also learn critical pastoral disciplines like mentoring and short-term counseling.

Pastors must be men who model faith, hope, love, personal discipline, and theological wisdom not only in the church but in their homes and in the communities in which they serve.  The Pastoral Ministry Track is uniquely designed for men who sense God’s call on their lives, to prepare them for ministry into the 21st century.

* Candidates attempting to enroll in the Pastor Ministry Track at The Pastor’s Institute must have the endorsement of their pastor who is in full agreement with Port Jervis School of the Bible’s STATEMENT OF FAITH. Port Jervis School of the Bible does not ordain men into the ministry, this is the role of the church.  Our school gives the academic foundation necessary for ordination.

“For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.  Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.”

                                                    – St. Paul to the Elders in Ephesus, Acts 20:27-31

When we choose people for official service in God’s church we must think of all that is involved. Our task is to appoint people of known ability who all their lives have shown what they can do, and who have been tried and tested over many years.

—JOHN CALVIN, ‘Sermons on 1 Timothy’
